6.25.08 · Spokesman-Review · video ➤ Boat racing in a freakin’ field

The Pacific Northwest is the only place in the United States where people race sprint boats. The sport originated in Australia and has become an expensive hobby for a lot of families here. The racers soup up these boats to race against the clock, following a set course through twists and turns carved out of a field. It was the second race ever at Webb's Slough in St. John, Wash.

I shot this with a standard-def Sony DCR-SR200 and edited it in Final Cut. I wrote and recorded the voiceover myself. The challenge here was getting close enough to the action and getting usable audio. And keeping dry and clean (I didn't).

6.12.08 · Spokesman-Review · video ➤ Avista Stadium renovation

Every stadium has its history. Avista Stadium in Spokane, Wash., has been home to minor-league baseball teams for more than 50 years. But the ballpark has seen some big upgrades. This is a look at the newest updates, plus a blast from the past.

I shot the stadium footage with a standard-def Sony DCR-SR200, used file photos from The Spokesman-Review's vault and got stock music. The challenge in producing this video was using motion on the still photos, which took some time to master.

6.7.08 · Spokesman-Review · video ➤ Swoop mascot tryouts

Ever been sitting around at a football game and wondered who's running around in that mascot suit? Well, no one will tell you once they choose someone. That's why you have to go to the tryouts to see how hot, sweaty and exhausting being a mascot truly can be.

I shot this with a standard-def Sony DCR-SR200 camcorder and edited in Final Cut. The big challenge was color correction, due to poor lighting conditions in the gym. One wall was covered with mirrors, which limited framing and movement.

5.8.08 · Spokesman-Review · video ➤ WSU women’s rowing

One of the vastly underappreciated sports out there is rowing, a beautiful and graceful sport with an underlying reality of brutal training regimens, early-morning practices and harsh weather. The Washington State University team is one of the best in the Pac-10, and hence in the top tier nationally.

I shot this with a standard-def Sony DCR-SR200 and edited it in Final Cut. A major challenge was just getting steady shots, being whipped around in the coach's chase boat and bouncing over waves. Sound was another challenge, but engine noise was unavoidable.
